An 18th Century Musical Evening
Date: Friday 01 October 2010
Date: Friday 01 October 2010
Until: Friday 01 October 2010
The Earl & Countess of Devon are hosting this 4th concert in aid of The Powderham Castle 1769 Organ Restoration Fund.
For this special event, as guests of Lord and Lady Devon, the programme is based on music in the Castle Archive - two pieces for organ and strings by Mozart, two trios by Corelli, some highly-charged arias from Handel's 'Theodora', and well-known Shakespeare Songs by Thomas Arne. It will also feature a very attractive trio by the Italian composer Nardini, newly re-discovered and probably enjoying its first performance in over 200 years!
To complete the picture of a musical evening from the late 1790s are a Minuet by another virtually unknown composer, Astorga, and two splendidly over-blown songs from a Comic Opera 'The Lord of the Manor', by William Jackson of Exeter - a fascinating mix, mostly of familiar music, but with a sprinkling of the unknown and a moment or two of the deservedly forgotten!
Josie Walledge - soprano
Brenda Willoughby and Lindsay Braga - violins
Vicky Evans - cello, George Pratt - organ
Generous sponsorship, for this concert and the next (14th December), has been given by TOTAL Event Hire of Newton Abbot.
