Guided Castle Tours
To see inside the Castle you will need to join one of our guided tours. All the tours are guided tours and they leave from the Courtyard Gift Shop at regular intervals throughout the day. If you like you may wait in the Courtenay Gallery, which is accessed via the Gift Shop, where you will find seating and a display of Castle memorabilia, including the coronation robes worn by the late Earl & Countess of Devon to the Queen's coronation in 1953.
On a Castle tour you will see the majestic rooms and hear fascinating stories about the Courtenay family as told by our knowledgeable and engaging guides. The tour lasts a good hour and our guides adapt it to suit their audience, so it is an entertaining experience for all.
Being a 600 year old Castle means accessibility is limited for wheelchair users. A wheelchair user would be able to see the ground floor, which incorporates approximately 45 minutes of the tour. A wheelchair is available for loan whilst in the Castle only on a first come first served basis.
We offer special rates for groups of 15 or more. Please visit our Groups page for more information.
Please note the last guided tour takes place an hour before closing and at 2.30pm on Fridays. (exludes Fridays between 21 July and 31 August)
Occasionally, for maintenance to be carried out or for a private function some rooms are closed off to the public so the tour is adapted. Please call ahead of your visit and we can let you know if there is anything scheduled.
