Visiting Overview

Powderham Castle lies in a beautiful deer park setting on the banks of the River Exe, just a stone's throw from the historic cathedral city of Exeter. This year is extra special as it is the Castle's 50th anniversary, the Courtenay family have been welcoming visitors to the Castle since 1959. In that time in excess of a million people have been through the doors to share in over 600 years of history and heritage and take away many fond memories. This year we expect to welcome back some of those visitors, along with many new ones, to enjoy a wonderful enchanting day out at one of the loveliest places in Devon.

Very little of the Castle itself has changed since those early days, but there are now many more attractions in the grounds for visitors of all ages to enjoy.

We are thrilled to announce as a result Powderham Castle was chosen from over 200 applicants as a finalist in the 'Tourism Oscars' - The South West Tourism Excellence awards, achieving 3rd place overall. This is a reflection of the many improvements the attraction has seen over the past 2 years; the children's play area, activity trails and the Victorian Kitchen, all enhancing our visitors' experience.

You can read more about the Castle & Estate and its 600 years of history on the History section of our website.

Every year we host events that support a number of different charities and this year will be no different. We are supporting two local worthwhile charities; The Devon Air Ambulance Trust of which Lord Devon is a patron and The Helen Foundation of which Lady Devon is a patron.
