Kenton Primary School – forest school comes to Powderham!

Kenton Primary School – forest school comes to Powderham!

All children at Kenton Primary will have the opportunity to take their learning outdoors this year, using a unique woodland setting on the Powderham Estate.

Every Monday, classes will gather at the site off Slittercombe Lane for sessions which link to the school curriculum and are delivered using the forest school ethos.

At Forest School, children learn through play and exploration; children learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks and to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others. The Forest School Association says:

"Forest School is an inspirational process that offers ALL learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees."

Chestnut Class (year 5 & 6) are the first to take part and outdoor learning links nicely to their current topic about Prehistoric Britain. Children have already enjoyed foraging for blackberries to make ‘Stone Age Squash’ over the fire and are beginning to create their own primitive woodland shelters. The coming weeks will see lessons in fire lighting, cooking, ‘cave painting’ with natural pigments and much more!
