Powderham Castle lies in a beautiful deer park on the banks of the River Exe, just a stone's throw from the historic cathedral city of Exeter. The Castle was first opened to visitors in 1959, since then in excess of a million people have been through the doors to share in over 600 years of history and heritage and take away many fond memories.

Very little of the Castle itself has changed since those early days, but there are now many more attractions in the grounds for visitors of all ages to enjoy. This year we expect to welcome back visitors, along with many new ones, to enjoy a wonderful enchanting day out at one of the loveliest places in Devon.

The Walled Garden

Secret Garden

The Secret Garden Play Area & Pets Corner is home to the many friendly Powderham pets and our adventure play area. A donkey, pot-bellied pigs, goats, guinea pigs, chickens, sheep, and stick-insects, to name but a few, live here in a blissfully happy environment and enjoy the company of visitors, children and adults alike.

Children inspired by their visit to the 600-year-old real Castle can let their imaginations run wild in Courtenay Fort, located within the Secret Garden, and play at being heroic knights and princesses - defending their prized Fort.

Join one of our guided tours to hear the history of the Castle and the Courtenays.

On our Castle tours you will see the many majestic rooms and hear fascinating stories about the Courtenay family as told by our knowledgeable and engaging guides. All of our guides adapt each tour to suit their audience, so it is an entertaining experience for all!

Tours have limited availability and are bookable through the Welcome Centre on arrival. Please note tours are first come first served.

Explore the Castle at your own pace in our daily Open House sessions.

For those who love to explore, discover our Open House sessions, allowing you to visit the State Rooms and find out the hidden secrets of the Castle at your leisure.

Please note, last entry to the castle is at 2:30pm.
