We have lots of opportunities available in multiple areas of the business, all working towards providing our visitors with the best experience possible and to keep this iconic family home available to all. Whether one area takes your fancy or you’d like to lend a hand in multiple areas, we can find something to fit you!

Room Guide

What you'll be doing as a Room Guide:

  • Taking an active role in the welcoming, enjoyment and safety of all visitors
  • Helping visitors learn about the castle, engaging and answering queries 
  • Assisting our team of Tour Guides in protecting the interior of the castle from damage during Open House
  • Being responsible for the safe evacuation of visitors in an emergency

Garden Assistant

​​​​​​What you'll be doing as a Garden Assistant:

  • Assisting with general care of our plants, shrubs and trees including: pruning, weeding, planting, watering, potting. From March - June you'll be working on keeping the roses looking their best in our Rose Garden!
  • Planting seeds and bulbs, arranging flower beds, baskets and troughs
  • Providing all visitors with a warm welcome to the Castle and Grounds
  • Engaging with visitors and relaying interesting facts about the gardens, proving gardening tips and answering any questions visitors may have

House Conservation Assistant

What you'll be doing as a Conservation Assistant:

  • Assisting the Housekeeping team in preserving the Castle and its artifacts. 
  • This role is project based and as such does not run through out the year 
  • Working within a small team on a variety of projects such as preserving and cataloguing our books, cleaning and repairing antiques and treating our wood and furniture
  • Engaging with members of the public and answering questions about the work you’re doing

Archive & Collections Assistant

What you'll be doing as a Archive & Collections Assistant:

  • Assisting the Collections team in preserving the Castle and its collections.   
  • Working within a small team helping us to catalogue our collections. 
  • Preparing items for exhibtion.
  • Moniting enviromental conditions. 

Welcome Assistant

What you’ll be doing as a Welcome Assistant:

  • Assisting members of the Visitor Welcome and Guiding team in giving a warm welcome to all visitors
  • Being familiar with Powderham and keen to learn about the castle’s history and visitor attraction
  • Assisting in the selling of tickets and guidebooks
  • Providing visitors with relevant castle information, i.e. tour times, maps, events etc.
  • Welcoming visitors to Open House during school holidays

Animal Care Assistant

What you'll be doing as an Animal Care Assistant:

  • Providing all visitors with a warm welcome to the Secret Garden
  • Engaging with visitors and relaying information and interesting facts about the animals/answering any questions visitors may have
  • Maintaining a high standard of care and welfare for each animal. Animal husbandry duties include: cleaning of animal pens, feeding, monitoring and keeping records of health, grooming
  • Ensuring all visitor areas are kept clean and tidy. Daily duties include: litter picking, path sweeping and checking the play equipment
