From the 9th to the 11th of July, Estuary Players are presenting Like a House on Fire, a horrible histories type look at the theatre in Exeter.
It’s not well known that for nearly 500 years, Exeter was a leading venue for theatre, and there are many weird and wonderful stories to tell. The show includes original songs as well as tales of the eccentric behaviour of actors since time began!
Set in the atmospheric Courtyard of Powderham Castle, we’ll bring you memories of the Brotherhood of Brothelyngham, a real street theatre group from 1400, who were said to corrupt nuns and were banned by the Bishop. Then there’s Robin Hood, a big favourite in Exeter in the 1500s, along with the Mystery Plays. We’ll hear about Shakespeare’s visit with his theatre group (well, maybe!), and Edmund Kean, the drunken stage genius, and many more strange tales from Exeter’s history.
The performances starts at 6.00 pm each evening, entry is open from 5.30 pm.
Tickets are available by calling 01392 661570 or through the booking link below.
Please note, this is an open-air performance and audience members will need to bring their own chairs.
