Things To Do

There’s so much to do on a day out at Powderham, we’ve tried to show the highlights below, but haven’t included things like running freely through the grass, fighting imaginary dragons in the turrets, or spending an afternoon connecting deeply with the sitters in the paintings.

Castle Tours

We offer unique tours every day, it’s a great way to really learn the history of the castle and the family. They are delivered by our friendly and extremely knowledgeable guides. Tours last between 45 minutes – 1 hour.

We offer three consistent tours per day: The State Rooms Tour, Living at Powderham and Behind the Scenes. In addition, our guides have each curated their own tours that vary from day to day, a special of the day!

Explore the Castle

You don’t have to go around with a guide, we open much of the house for you to explore at your own pace. Whether you want to nip around quickly or spend time studying all the details. We have room stewards who can help with any questions, plus we’ve provided some information boards or highlighted particularly exciting objects from the collection.

Quests!

What’s a trip to a Castle if you’re not completing a noble quest? We’ve produced a range of fun trails and activities suitable for all ages to complete as part of their experience in the castle, or out in the grounds. Stickers are available for those who manage to complete them during their visit.

Nature Detective Bags

We’ve got new explorer bags this year, designed to help inquisitive minds explore the grounds. From bug hunting to crafts there’s a range of activities to keep children engaged.

Secret Garden

Enclosed within the Victorian Walled Garden you’ll find our petting zoo, playground, potting shed cafe and community allotment. Children can burn off some energy conquering the Courtenay Fort, whilst grown-ups can top back up with a coffee from the Potting Shed!

Animal Encounters

Whether it’s a trek with an Alpaca through the woods to the Belvedere Tower, or grooming a pony, there’s plenty of ways for you to meet and get to know our animals in our licensed petting zoo. Activities vary day by day, but there’s always something to see and someone excited to meet you.

Castle and Woodland Gardens

Take your time to enjoy all our grounds have to offer. From the formal walk around the Rose Garden, to the rugged hill climb up to the Belvedere Tower. There’s over 150 acres of outdoor space to explore, walk the dogs or enjoy a picnic.
