A Feast for the Senses – A unique Tudor Experience in the heart of Devon.
Is your class studying Magnificent Monarchs, the Tudors, or English and Local History this year? Why not immerse your students in the world of Henry VIII’s court at Powderham Castle from the 17th to the 20th of June.
In 1533 Henry and Gertrude Courtenay, Marquis and Marchioness of Exeter and Earl of Devon hosted a lavish feast for King Henry VIII in their Surrey home, West Horsley Place.
Powderham Castle, home of the Earl of Devon, and the modern Courtenay family, are using brand new research to create multi-sensory, immersive activities for students to experience this magnificent event first hand.
Travel back in time and surround yourself in the captivating world of the Tudor Courtenay household as they prepare for a royal visit.
The Hosting Henry Experiential Workshops encourage active participation, truly bringing the past to life.
Led by knowledgeable and enthusiastic costumed guides and instructors, discover the sounds and smells of a Tudor kitchen, feel the fabrics and outfits worn by courtiers, dance at a royal banquet and much more!
Smell exotic spices shipped from around the world, feel the luxurious fabrics of court dress and practise your skills on the dance floor learning moves fit for a King!

Tudor Dancing: Slip on your dancing shoes and step like a Tudor, immersing yourself in the sights and sounds of authentic dances from the Royal Court of Henry VIII. Led by the Tudor Dance Group, learn moves fit for a King! This will be a thirty to 40 minute session.
A feast for the senses: Tantalise the taste buds and stimulate the senses in our Tudor kitchen as the staff prepare a feast fit for a king. Join be our costumed team as we prep and recreate recipes from the 1533 banquet. This will be a thirty to 40 minute session.
Courtenay Closet: Meet the Courtenays! The Marquis and Marchioness of Exeter greet you as they preside over a magnificent festival fit for a King! See the outfits they have chosen and experience the feel of the sumptuous fabrics worn the most elite in Tudor Britain. This will be a thirty to 40 minute session.
Tudor Sports: Admire the majestic sweep of birds of prey in our hunting display, set in Powderham’s picturesque grounds. Discover the outdoor pursuits of the traveling Tudor court, and learn how the King hunted in tandem with these captivating creatures. This will be a thirty to 40 minute outdoor session.
